2011 has been a difficult and turbulent year. The Japan Earthquake and the floods in Thailand disrupted many supply chains and the delivery of critical materials and components. The European debt crisis and the fiscal squabble leading to the downgrade of the US sovereign debt rating has strained the global financial system and made it more volatile and weaker. The Arab Spring in the Middle East, growing unrest in the poorer regions of China, growing discontent in US and Europe over high unemployment, the vices of Wall Street and very recently, the death of the North Korean Leader have all contributed to increase the level of fear and uncertainty in the global economy, where growth is expected to be slower in 2012. At the Singapore corporate front, we saw the spate of S chips corporate governance lapses and the proposed changes to the Code of Corporate Governance, the SGX listing rules, the Companies Act and the Takeover Code.
